The objective of this article is to analyze the behavior of family labor supply in Brazil in response to the economic cycle. For this purpose, the study was structured in three essays. In the first one, the objective is to analyze the response of Brazilian couples' labor supply to family characteristics and economic cycles. Using data from the PME from 2002 to 2015 and estimating labor supply equations considering the SUR model, it was verified that the participation of women in the labor market has increased, but still has disadvantages in relation to men’s participation. In the second essay, the objective is to analyze the behavior and determinants of the Labor Force Participation Rate (TPFT) of the family and its members, as well as the sensitivity of this to economic cycles. In this article, information from the PNAD continued from 2012 to 2017 was used, which descriptive analyzes were performed. The results suggest that the negative effects of the economic cycles are smoothed by the families' spouses when presenting countercyclical behavior. Finally, in the third and last essay, the objective is to test the hypothesis of the presence of the spouses' additional work effect face to the householder. With the PNAD continuous data from 2012 to 2017 and the estimates of logit models, it was found that the loss of the householder’s job has a significant effect on the labor supply of his/her spouse, confirming the presence of the effect in the Brazilian economy.
